A great option for the GT student is to develop a musical talent. Here at Powell, we offer Band, Choir, and Strings.
So, why choose a music class? Here are some things to consider:
Students will develop a skill that can be used throughout life
Music stimulates both sides of the brain by requiring creative and logical thought processes
Students meet new friends and become a part of a positive group
Learning an instrument requires students to be disciplined which transfers to other aspects of school and life
Music promotes a healthy individual by boosting self confidence, personal expression, and emotional maturity.
At Powell, we have a variety of band choices:
6th Grade Band: 6th grade only, beginners and experienced
Our 6th grade musicians, both new and experienced, come together for 6th grade band, which will host 4 concerts next year. During this class, many individual assignments and assessments are done, individual performance opportunities are available, and small group and individualized instruction are given on each and every instrument to ensure that every student progresses at the level and pace they are able. Traditionally this band has been over 50% beginners and therefore goes through a beginning (or 1st year) band method book.
Concert Band: 7th & 8th Grade, beginners and experienced
This is a 2nd year band. In other words, students are placed in Concert Band by ability and should be ready to learn from the second band method book in the series. Being grouped by ability means there are fewer individual assignments and assessments (but there are still some), there are still individual performance opportunities, and small group and individualized instruction on each instrument. We have found that beginning students can succeed in this class too since the second band method book reviews book one in the beginning. With the help of the other band students (who were likely helped in 6th grade by experienced students and eager to be the experienced helper of someone else), the success rate of beginners in Concert Band has been quite high.
Symphonic Band: 7th & 8th Grade, by audition only
This is a 3rd year band. In other words, students are placed in Symphonic Band by ability and should be ready to learn from the third band method book in the series. There are some (but not very many) individual assignments, assessments, performance opportunities, and instruction. This band is expanding the musical knowledge and technical facility needed in high school bands.
Puma Band: 8th Grade, by audition only
This is a high school level band. Students are placed in Puma Band by ability and by showing they are done with learning from the three books in the band method series. High school level books and materials are used to learn from, and high school level music is performed at the concerts. There are some (but not very many) individual assignments, assessments, performance opportunities, and instruction. The Puma Band performs and competes at concert band festivals just like a high school band would. Except for being held in a middle school class, the Puma Band is a high school band.
